What is a root canal?

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?  The removal of infection and the infected nerve from the inside of your tooth .  That space is then sterilized and filled so that no further infection can get in.

WILL IT CAUSE DISCOMFORT?  The discomfort you may feel is due to the infection. If you take all of the antibiotics as directed, most of the infection will be gone and so will the discomfort.   Your tooth will be numbed while we work on it and you should not feel any discomfort .  As the numbness starts to wear off, you should take some aspirin to help with the soreness.  Usually you will experience more discomfort for a day or so after we have worked on your tooth.  (Remember, that nerve in your tooth was attached to other nerves!)  For this reason ,we  prescribe very strong pain medication with most root canals.  You should not drive or drink alcohol with it.  Your tooth will begin to feel a lot better.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE ROOT CANAL? After we are sure all of the infection is gone, we will fill your tooth with a permanent filling.  If a large portion of your tooth has broken or been destroyed by the infection /cavity, we will place a crown on your tooth to protect it from further damage.

DO ROOT CANALS ALWAYS WORK?  No!  A root canal is a therapy, not a cure.  It has a high success rate but almost 4% of them fail.  Sometimes the infection does not clear up.  At that point we may redo the root canal  or we will send you to a specialist.

IF THIS IS YOUR CASE, FOR A PERIOD OF 3 YEARS FROM THE DATE OF COMPLETION, WE WILL REFUND YOUR COST.   IN ADDITION, IF THE TOOTH CANNOT BE SAVED, THE COST OF THE CROWN OR FILLING PLACED ON THAT TOOTH WILL ALSO BE REFUNDED.

THIS WARRANTY  IS NULL AND VOID IF THE PATIENT DOES NOT MAINTAIN HIS/HER 6 MONTH CONTINUING CARE  APPOINTMENTS.

People always ask us how long should this last?  In our office we strive for perfection and satisfaction, which is why we are happy to provide this warranty for you. Today's technology has not only provided new ways of restoring teeth, but has also shown us that we can , in fact, prevent dental disease.  Instead of going to the dentist every few years for "Drill and Fill",  we hope that you will try preventive dentistry.  If you spend a few minutes every morning and evening brushing and flossing as we recommend, and have us professionally clean your teeth regularly, you can prevent  most disease.  This is why all of our warranties must be null and void if we don't see you for your regular 6 month check-ups!

Tidbits for Tots.

If you are expecting or have children, let us know that.  Voice any concerns you may have about your child’s dental health.

Your child’s 1st dental visit can take place any time after birth but no later than 2 ½ or 3yrs.  Let your child accompany you for your cleaning appointment so he or she can get familiar with the sights and sounds and smells.

We can take a quick look at your child’s teeth as he or she sits on your lap.

Your child should take a fluoride pill or drops if you do not have fluoride in your drinking water.  Check with your municipality. Many areas in Westmoreland county do not have it.  Most bottled water does not contain fluoride.

You should brush your child’s teeth until they are able to do a good job.  Even after they begin brushing their own, brush them yourself once a week so you can have a better look in the child’s mouth, checking for any problems.

Parents should floss their child’s teeth until the child can do it. Have them use the child flossers, making it easier for them! At 8 years, children should be able to hold the floss correctly in their hands.

Pop and sweets should be considered a treat, not an everyday necessity. Do not give your child anything to drink overnight besides water.  Do not allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle filled with milk or juice

Children should continue to visit the dentist every 6 months.  We are not only checking for cavities but for alignment and space as new teeth come in.  Many times we can catch and correct a problem, eliminating the need for braces in the future.

Good habits for great teeth!

Good Drinks:  WATER!, milk

OK drinks:  Juice, Hi-C, lemonade

BAD Drinks: POP!

Ideas: Try not to drink pop everyday. It’s better to drink a pop with a meal.

Diet pop is worse for teeth than regular. Juice boxes are better with a meal.

Water is the best in between meals drink (quenches thirst and good for body!).

Good Snacks:  Raw fruits and Veggies

OK snacks:  Cereals, chips, chocolate

BAD snacks:  Anything sugary and sticky Gummy bears, etc

If you can’t brush after a meal or snack:

Rinse your mouth with water

Chew Sugarless Gum

Brush and floss before bed, then rinse with a fluoride rinse (ACT)

Brush after breakfast, before school

Teeth Whitening

We offer teeth whitening.  In 2 weeks, your teeth will be whiter, we guarantee it!

Whitening your teeth is a very easy process.  You can choose to whiten overnight or during the day.  Either way, you can do it at your own convenience, placing the whitening gel in custom made “retainers” that fit firmly against your teeth.  Wear them for an hour or 2 daily .  You can talk with them in and their almost invisible.  Or you can wear it overnight, which works especially good for those who tend to grind their teeth at night, as the retainer acts like a nightguard to protect your teeth.

Teeth whitening is totally safe for your teeth. You may experience some increased sensitivity during the process. It does not remove enamel but changes the color of not only the enamel layer but the inner layer.  Therefore, your teeth will remain whiter than they were when you started.  It’s a permanent change!

Air Abrasion - Drilless Dentistry!

What is air abrasion?  It’s a painless, quiet way to remove decay in small cavities or resurface older, discolored composite fillings.  It does not work well for large cavities or removing previous fillings.

Our unit blows a high concentration of powder through a tiny nozzle onto the small area we want to clean.

Because the only thing that touches your tooth is the powder, no friction is created and therefore, no pain is felt.  In most cases, there is no need for anesthesia.  Once the decay and stain is removed, we fill in your tooth with a white, composite filling.

We have also found that using air abrasion in placing sealants increases their retention.
